History

Saheliyon Ki Bari, meaning "Garden of the Maidens," was created for a group of forty-eight maidens during the reign of Maharana Sangram Singh from 1710 to 1734. Situated on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, it provides a lush green sanctuary in the arid landscape of Rajasthan. According to legend, the king himself designed the garden and gifted it to his queen, who was accompanied by forty-eight maids in her marriage. Intended as a refuge from the political intrigues of the court, the garden offered the royal ladies moments of pleasure and relaxation. It served as a popular spot for the queen and her entourage to stroll and enjoy leisure time away from the pressures of court life.

Architecture

Saheliyon Ki Bari is adorned with numerous fountains in its four water pools, along with intricately carved kiosks and marble elephants. Among its notable features are the bird fountains and lotus pools, creating a serene ambiance with flowerbeds, lush lawns, and marble pavilions upon entry. Maharana Bhopal Singh added a pavilion of raining fountains to enhance the garden's beauty, imported from England to evoke the imagery of maidens dancing in the rain.

The main reservoir boasts a central white marble kiosk and four black-marbled kiosks in the corners, adorned with sculpted bird figurines spouting water, simulating rain. A museum within the garden houses a vast collection of royal artifacts, including stuffed cobras and other animals, providing a thrilling sight. Bougainvilleas in the shaded lawns further enhance the garden's beauty. A central bath area adorned with a beautiful fountain adds to the garden's charm. With a marble throne, 2000 crystallized fountains, lotus flower pool, water-spouting birds, and elephants, Saheliyon Ki Bari remains an exotic beauty preserved to this day.
